A book talk and presentation by John Curl and other members of the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee.
Join us for a book talk and presentation by John Curl, author/curator of Indigenous People's Day: Handbook for Activists and Documentary History (IPD Press, 2017). In 1992, Berkeley became the first city in the world to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, which has since become a national and international holiday. John will be joined by other members of the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee, the group who founded the celebration in 1992 and who have organized the Berkeley Powwow and Indian Market for the last 33 years. They will be speaking about the origin and significance of Indigenous Peoples Day, the meaning and history of powwows, the native community in the Bay Area, and will be inviting you to the Berkeley Powwow & Indian Market.

"In 1992 Berkeley, California became the first city in the world to officially celebrate October 12 as Indigenous Peoples Day. This book is for people everywhere who want to know more about Indigenous Peoples Day, where it came from, what it’s all about, and who want to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day in your part of the world."
About John Curl:
"I’m a mixture of Irish-Catholic, English-Protestant, Romanian-Austrian Jew, and Neanderthal. I was born and mostly raised in Manhattan, and some in New Jersey. I received a degree in literature from New York City College. I have an extraordinary daughter, and I’ve lived in the Bay Area since 1971. I have published fiction, poetry, essays and history in numerous magazines and periodicals. I’m a long time member of PEN Oakland, the Revolutionary Poets Brigade, and the Berkeley Indigenous Peoples Day Committee. At the same time, I’ve mostly made a living doing custom woodworking."
About the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee:
"The Indigenous Peoples Committee works for social justice and human rights for Native Peoples. We promote the necessity of Indigenous wisdom for human survival in balance with the environment. We organize educational and cultural events publicizing Native struggles, including Indigenous Peoples Day Powwow and Indian Market annually on the Saturday nearest October 12th."
