From swing and bebop to fusion and free, come explore the variety of jazz music with library staff
Join us on Tuesday, August 26th from 6pm to 7pm for the return of the Berkeley Record Club at the Central Library. Patrons are encouraged to contribute and take part in sessions when possible by bringing their own records, CDs or tapes to be played, or by making requests during the program.
The session for August will focus on the what many critics have called the quintessential American art form: Jazz.
Starting in the early 20th century from a "rich cultural heritage rooted in the African-American experience," (Jazz in America) jazz has become a global phenomenon, spreading this uniquely American art form to the far corners of our world. This session will look at the breadth of jazz and its various subgenres.
From the swing and energy of bebop and big band music, to the aural explorations of free jazz, fusion, and beyond, library staff will pull highlights from our collection and their own listening to share this vibrant and important genre with you.
