Selections from the work of the Coltranes, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, and more
Strongly influenced by John Coltrane, especially his watershed album A Love Supreme and subsequent work until his untimely death in July of 1967 at the age of 40, "spiritual jazz" is more a feeling and aesthetic than a definable, singular sound.
Emphasizing a freedom from standard compositions, a fiery, almost apocalyptic fervor, and allusion to religions and cultures from across the globe—from African American traditions and Islam, to astrology, Hinduism, and Buddhism—this style and approach to jazz flourished in the decade after Coltrane's passing.
Join us on the 5th floor for a music listening session featuring the recordings of many of Coltrane's band mates and other artists that drew from the same spiritual source for their work. Learn about the breadth of this movement within jazz while meditating on a selection of prime examples, mostly played on vinyl.
