60th anniversary celebration for Berkeley's Community Chorus & Orchestra.
The library celebrates the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra’s 60th anniversary with a 6-week long exhibit of photographs, mementos, and ephemera. The exhibit is at the Central Library at 2090 Kittredge Street from May 1-June 13.
Join us Saturday, May 23, starting at 3:00 PM to learn more about this long-time Berkeley community organization, their June performance of the Terezin Requiem, and to browse the exhibit.
Light refreshments will be served afterwards.
The Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra (BCCO) commissioned composer Michael Schachter to create a choral work to commemorate the organization’s 60th anniversary and to honor the memory of the prisoners in the Terezin concentration camp. At this library event on May 23, Berkeley Symphony cellist and San Francisco Conservatory music history professor, Isaac Pastor-Chermak, will speak about the extraordinary challenges of composers and musicians in Nazi-occupied Europe, and will present several examples of music composed and performed in Terezin and other concentration camps. The audience will also hear from a descendent of Otto Bendix who was imprisoned at Terezin.
The library in partnership with the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra invites the Berkeley community to attend a performance of the Terezin Requiem, which is scheduled from June 12-14 at the First Presbyterian Church located at 2407 Dana St, Berkeley. Admission is free. More details are here on the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra website (BCCO.ORG).
