Art & Music Study HallAn exploration and sampling of John Coltrane's recorded music
Join us for a special On the Record session—this month we're listening to the work of John Coltrane on the 100th anniversary of his birth!
Born and raised in North Carolina in 1926, in a short life lasting only 40 years, Coltrane had a monumental impact on the way jazz is played and performed, and tested the limits of his chosen instruments, the tenor and soprano saxophones.
We'll trace his rise from an unassuming sideman to one of the most profound and impactful musicians of all time, playing most of the music straight from vinyl.
Discover the hard bop and rapid fire styling of his early work and hits such as his take on "My Favorite Things" and his original composition "Giant Steps," to the spiritual, ecstatic free jazz recordings from the final years of his life.
