Christy Chan performs the US Constitution backwards

Audience participation encouraged! Chan will perform pieces of the Constitution backwards to give a new approach to this document. A panel discussion will follow.

Join us at the Central Library for an afternoon of civic engagement, in collaboration with the Berkeley Art Center. To start, artists Christy Chan will perform readings from the U.S. Constitution in reverse. This flip of the reading is designed to ask questions about this founding document of the United States: who does the Constitution belong to? Who does it serve? Whose rights are actually protected and whose are not? How does this document land and effect our modern society and government?

Reading will start around 1:00pm on Saturday October 24th on the 2nd floor in the Historic Lobby, audience participation is encouraged!

Following this performance, in order to ground the conversation, there will be an hour long discussion panel featuring Bay Area professionals working in the legal system and social and civil rights. Currently titled "Whose Constitution?" The aim of the panel is to explore the question "What should our relationship to the constitution be, in this moment of time, both as individuals citizens and as members of communities? Moderated by cultural historian Jeff Chang and featuring Michael Schulze-Oechtering (a community organizer with CSU East Bay) and Nicole Ozer (with UC Law SF’s Center for Constitutional Democracy and Electronic Frontier Foundation).

Panel talk will start about 15 to 20 minutes after the performance, around 1:30/1:45pm.
