The Black American Sound System is joining forces with the Berkeley Public Library to transform its branches into vibrant hubs of Black musical culture and community memory.
This In The Stax concert is a function of The Break Room, an ongoing collaboration with Black American Sound System.
Kayatta is an American rapper, poet, producer and educator who grew up in the drug tattered streets of West Oakland. Over the years she has developed into an all around talent who is not only skilled on stage but extremely effective in the classroom. Recently crowned best Hip Hop artist in Sonoma Kayatta continues to push the envelope socially, creatively, and dutifully. Effortlessly fusing poetry with drums and bass to create sonic goodness that seethes with audacious honey. She is one of one and a delightful treat to your ears, especially if you are a hip-hop lover. Her sound is hers alone and rooted in telling a story that is authentic, reflective, black, queer, joyous, engaging, and inspiring.
Currently residing in Berkeley California Kayatta has found a refreshing way to utilize poetry that centers youth voices and impacts social and communal change. Her musical compositions are relatable, uplifting, and thought provoking. Not only is she extremely gifted with words she has a keen sense to connect with the community in a way that is healing and spiritual. This approach has resulted in a faithful community of fans who understand and resonate with the art she is curating and delivering.
The Berkeley Public Library's In the Stax is collaborating with artist Derwin Deon Brown II, founder of the Black American Sound System (B.A.S.S.) in bringing Black American music into the library.
This partnership will feature a sound exhibit titled The Break Room with two activations called The People's Sonic Park and 7th Street Cafe which will be on display at the Central Library's 2nd and 5th floor September-December 2026. This collaboration will also feature public programming across all five of our locations where the community will be able to interact with the exhibit, learn the rich history and current scene of Black American music in the Bay Area as well as live music events and workshops.
