Moving ahead after collapse of the traditional career ladder

What can you do when your career ladder breaks? Or disappears? When you are thinking of pivoting across your skillsets to something else? When a job has grown out of your skillsets, but you have not mastered the additional skills? Your last job may best be considered to be just one step. It may not necessarily define your career. A reframing over the entire span of your career may alert you to new opportunities. Looking at your strengths, knowledge, and skills over the long term may suggest life interests that could become the nucleus of a new direction. That is, family and community life over the years may have familiarized you with potential career paths in pets, youth, education, health, recreational pursuits, and cause advocacy. Resolving to network purposefully and build new skillsets can open additional choices in your discovery. Principal holdbacks in pursuing a new career base are needs to (1) learn terminology of a new industry; 2) upgrade or learn new skills; (3) adjust to higher or lower organizational levels; (3) navigate new unfamiliar organization structures, and (4) adapt from a small organization to a large organization.
