Join us for a documentary screening of And Then They Came for Us followed by a discussion and Q/A with the film's Director Abby Ginzberg and Satsuki Ina, author of The Poet and the Silk Girl.
The documentary And Then They Came for Us looks at the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and its lasting effects, told through the voices of survivors and their families. Using personal stories, archival footage, and historical background, the film shows how fear, racism, and wartime hysteria led to widespread violations of civil liberties. It also explains why this history is still important today.
After the screening, we invite you to join a conversation with director Abby Ginzberg and Satsuki Ina, who is an author, psychotherapist, and activist. They will discuss the film’s themes, share personal experiences related to the history, and highlight the ongoing need to protect civil liberties for everyone. This event brings together people from different library communities to learn, reflect, and think about how lessons from the past still affect us today
This program is in partnership with the Alameda County Library Albany Branch, bringing our communities together around The Poet and the Silk Girl: A Memoir of Love, Imprisonment, and Protest by Satsuki Ina. Through shared reading and related events, we reflect on history, foster dialogue, and connect past injustices to present-day conversations about civil liberties and belonging.
