Celebrate Black History Month at Claremont Branch when we screen this award winning documentary on the life and work of artist Nellie Mae Rowe. Snacks and a discussion follow the film.
Born on July 4, 1900, artist Nellie Mae Rowe lived through the 20th century, creating art largely in obscurity with found materials until she was "discovered" several years before her death. The daughter of a sharecropper and former slave, her personal story is interwoven with the social and political history of 20th century Georgia. Rowe’s remarkable story is told through stop-motion animation, drawings, and interviews. Please stay for refreshments and a discussion after the screening. For a taste of the film, which is in Kanopy and can be accessed with your Berkeley Public Library card, watch the trailer at https://thisworldisnotmyown.com/
