Learn several different styles of Japanese stab binding in this free participatory craft program!
In this handsewn bookbinding workshop, participants will learn multiple styles of Japanese stab binding and leave with their own creations. A simple, customizable, and beautiful method of bookbinding first brought to prominence in Japan, stab binding is characterized by elegant threadwork through a number of holes (typically four) around an exposed spine. We’ll work with waxed and linen bookbinding thread, as well as needles, awls, bone folders, and other bookbinding materials to sew a number of different stab bound booklets. The library will provide all materials, including blank paper for interior and cover options. This craft is for all skill levels, particularly those with little to no bookmaking or sewing experience. Additionally, we’ll discuss the many different methods of bookbinding and see examples of various bindings, from the DIY to the professional.
As a reference, check out this Creativebug class, "Japanese Side Sewn Sketchbook," taught by Jody Alexander, as we'll be using several of the methods from this class in our library workshop. Creativebug is an incredible digital library bringing thousands of award-winning video classes taught by top designers and artists to you for free. All Berkeley Public Library patrons have unlimited access to Creativebug with their library card number, so take advantage of this one-of-a-kind resource now!
