Set in 1930, the final entry in the Downton Abbey film trilogy brings back most characters from the Downton saga, with Lady Mary caught up in scandal and financial reversals placing Downton’s future in more jeopardy than ever before.
At first Maudie (Sally Hawkins) tracks as a visibly movement-impaired person being cared for by her Aunt Ida. But Maudie displays grit when Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke), a surly fishmonger, posts an ad at the local store for a housekeeper. Maudie follows him home and gets the position. Before long, they marry. She painstakingly decorates the walls of their house with simple paintings, leading Maudie to a new chapter in life as Maud Lewis, one of Canada’s foremost folk artists. The film gives Sally Hawkins another opportunity to deliver a transcendent performance, as she did in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water (2017). She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for both films.
Tom Destry (James Stewart), a former gunslinger, arrives in the town of Bottleneck to fill the position of Sheriff after the former sheriff is murdered, but Destry refuses to wear a gun. He intends to use guile to defeat the corrupt powers that have a stranglehold on Bottleneck. With Marlene Dietrich as Frenchy, the provocative saloon singer who falls for Destry.
Studio Ghibli produced this animated coming-of-age story. Shizuko Tsukishima is a 14 year old junior high student in Tokyo, where she is studying creative writing. One day she discovers that all her library books have been checked out previously by someone named Sheiji Amasawa. The two meet just as Sheiji, who is studying to become a violin maker, is leaving for a two month training with a luthier. While he’s away, she pours herself into writing a fantasy about herself and Sheiji. Directed by Yoshifumi Kondo.
Boys N the Hood was director John Singleton’s debut film. In it, three boys who’ve grown up together in South Central LA, become teens learning to operate amidst gangs and guns. Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut put in their first featured film performances. Also with Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Laurence Fishburne. It was one of the best films of its decade, both critically and financially successful.
A spinoff of the Rocky franchise, Creed features Michael Jordan as a young boxer, Adonis Creed, who is the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa’s former rival, later a friend. Adonis asks the now retired Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) to train him. In Rocky, Adonis also finds a mentor.
In 1968 petty criminal William O’Neal (LaKeith Stansfield) is arrested in Chicago. The FBI offers to have O’Neal’s car theft charges dropped if O’Neal will infiltrate the Chicago Black Panther Party [BPP], and becomes an FBI informant. Eventually O’Neal is in a position to help the FBI assassinate Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), the Chicago BBP’s inspirational chairman. Critically acclaimed. The film won a Best Supporting Actor award for Daniel Kaluuya.
Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) lives in Pittsburgh with his wife Rose (Viola Davis) and their son Cory (Jovan Adepo). Troy and his best friend Bono (Stephen McKinley Henderson) work side by side as garbage men, and they are storytellers. Directed by Denzel Washington. Screenplay by August Wilson, who also wrote the play upon which the screenplay is based. Davis swept the awards season for Best Supporting Actress. Washington was nominated for multiple Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor awards.
