Friday, July 11 A River Runs Through It
1992 / 123 min. / PG
Brothers Norman and Paul Maclean (Craig Sheffer and Brad Pitt) are the sons of a Presbyterian minister (Tom Skerritt) who teaches his boys the joys of fly fishing in Missoula, Montana. Norman is a straight arrow, but Paul is a rebel, which brings suffering to his family. The Montana setting is breathtaking. Based on a semi-autobiographical story by Norman Maclean, with Robert Redford directing. Also, with Brenda Blethyn, as the boys mother. She’s best known for the British police procedural “Vera” and the Mike Leigh film “Secrets and Lies” (1996).
Friday, July 18 Waste Land
2010 / 99 min. / NR
An uplifting feature documentary highlighting the transformative power of art and beauty of the human spirit. Top-selling contemporary artist Vik Muniz takes us on an emotional journey from Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest landfill on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, to the heights of international art stardom. Vik collaborates with the brilliant catadores, pickers of recyclable materials, true Shakespearean characters who live and work in the garbage quoting Machiavelli and showing us how to recycle ourselves. -- Anonymous
Friday, July 25 La La Land
2016 / 128 min. / PG-13
Aspiring actress / barista Mia (Emma Stone) and struggling jazz pianist Seb (Ryan Gosling) love and support each other during thin times but drift apart when success comes calling. Dance might as well be a third character in the film. The two principal actors make dance a part of their romance, and the opening scene of the film is of a flash mob extravaganza set on a clogged LA freeway. Damian Chazelle wrote and directed.
