Robin Williams plays Adrian Cronauer, an Armed Forces DJ in Saigon in 1965. His superiors frown on his “irreverent tendency,” but GIs love it. Director Barry Levinson has said that most of Williams’ broadcasts in the film were his own inventions. Williams won the Golden Globe for Best Actor and he was also nominated for an Oscar.

Think 30 or 40 years ago. Rob (John Cusack) owns a used record store in a trendy neighborhood of Chicago. Rob’s a hangdog list-maker currently laying down his top 5 romantic breakups right into the camera from the store’s front stoop, while his employee Barry (Jack Black) exhibits teeth-rattling entrepreunerial zeal inside the store. Cusack leads a wonderful ensemble cast while spinning a great soundtrack.

A former cat burglar, John Robie (Cary Grant) claims to be retired, but new burglaries occur that use his methods. Robie decides to catch the impostor in order to clear his own name. Not coincidentally, Robie begins to pursue the jewel-heavy daughter (Grace Kelly) of a nouveau riche American widow. Their molten affair begins in front of a fireworks display off the coast of Cannes. Happy Fourth of July.

A group of English and American ladies, known as the Scorpioni, have tea every afternoon, and cooperatively raise an orphaned Italian lad named Luca in 1935 Florence as Fascist Benito Mussolini considers his options. This is a lighthearted semi-autobiographical film by director Franco Zeffirelli, who is portrayed as young Luca in the film. It has an extraordinary cast including Maggie Smith, Cher, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, and Lily Tomlin.

Friday, August 14 Grosse Pointe Blank 1997 / 107 min / R

A dark comedy about a hitman (John Cusack) who returns to his wealthy hometown of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, for his high school reunion. Also with Minnie Driver as the hitman’s abandoned girlfriend, Alan Arkin as his psychiatrist and Dan Aykroyd as another hitman who is stalking him. Several reviews call the film’s writing “smart.”

A black comedy in which Katie (Tilda Swinton), the wife of former CIA analyst Osborne Cox (John Malkovich), directs her divorce lawyer’s assistant to put Cox’s financial records on a disc, but the assistant unwittingly includes a draft of his autobiography detailing CIA activities. Lost at the assistant’s gym, the disc is found by 2 ditzy gym employees (Frances McDormand & Brad Pitt), who try to cash in by selling the disc. Also starring George Clooney as a paranoid U.S. Marshall involved with Katie. Written and directed by Ethan and Joel Coen.

Based on a novel by Bernard Malamud, this film is not what you’d expect. It has a spiritual dimension that challenges audiences. As a boy, Roy Hobbs learns everything about baseball from his dad. As a teen, he is an exceptionally good baseball player, but his desire to make a name for himself is derailed when he has a health crisis. With Robert Redford, Glenn Close and Robert Duvall.
