Secrets and Lies
1996 / 136 min. / R
Secrets and Lies is a 1996 comedy-drama, a breakout hit for Mike Leigh, who wrote and directed it. Factory worker Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn, who later helmed the Brit police series Vera), hears from Hortense, a Black optometrist who is Cynthia’s adult daughter given up for adoption at birth. Cynthia’s dysfunctional family knows nothing of Hortense, but Hortense is determined to meet Cynthia. Secrets and Lies won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Blethyn was named Best Actress there, too.

The Thin Man
1934 / 91 min. / NR
One of this writer’s all-time favorites, The Thin Man is based on Dashiell Hammett’s novel of the same name and produced pre-Code just before censor Hayes started snarling at Hollywood. Inventor Clyde Wynant discovers $50,000 in bonds are gone, and promptly disappears himself. Meanwhile, socialites Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy) are drinking up New York and cracking wise as Christmas tiptoes near. Soon they’re investigating a murder, dripping droll dialogue as they go.
