Presentation on Historical Black Sacramento Street in South Berkeley in celebration of Juneteenth
The African American Berkeley Business Heritage project builds upon the African Americans in Berkeley’s History and Legacy Year 2 exhibition presented by the Berkeley Historical Society and co-curated by Stephanie Anne Johnson and Harvey Smith. The second of a three-year series of exhibitions featured a digital map and large-scale print of Black businesses in Berkeley from 1940 to 1970. The original data is being expanded into a broader, more interactive digital tool—adding new businesses, visuals, and community stories. This updated project is led by Stephanie Anne Johnson, PhD and will grow with your input and contributions.
Our first event will be at the Tarea Hall Pittman South Berkeley Branch Library on Friday, June 13th from 2-4 p.m. We also hope to see you at our booth for the Berkeley Juneteenth celebration on Sunday, June 15.
