Led by dancer, theater artist, and Berkeley Civic Arts Individual Artist Grantee, ChingChi Yu, this dance program is designed for all fitness levels, body types, and ages; no prior dance training is required. Each class will start with breathing and wellness movement exercises, such as tapping, level-arm swinging, and light stretching to warm and loosen up your body. We?ll work on balance and strengthening. Then we'll learn rhythmic movements which will later be integrated into an easy-to-follow choreographed routine. In this supportive environment, you can feel free to be yourself, connect with others, improve your overall well-being, and have fun!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ChingChi Yu performed in Taiwan?s LanLing Theater before relocating to California in 1986. She discovered choreography at UC Berkeley, and upon graduating with degrees in Dance and Linguistics joined Asian American Dance Performances as resident choreographer. ChingChi has danced in works by many Bay Area choreographers, and is a founding member of Dandelion Dance Theater. Her choreography has been presented throughout the Bay Area. In January 2023, she joined Dance Generators, an intergenerational dance troop aging from 18 to 91. ChingChi?s work is theatrical, with an emotional component. Her theater experience greatly influenced her choreography, which uses theatrical imagery, facial expressions, and intriguing character interactions to express a wide range of emotions and human experience. Her most recent show Undercurrents, co-produced with Carol Kueffer, was an afternoon of dance, physical comedy and dance theater with live music by violinist Linda Green and an art exhibit of sculptures by Norman Moore. It was a multi-discipline event. ChingChi enjoys teaching dance. She has taught at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center and South Berkeley Senior Center. She?s looking forward to teaching at the Berkeley Public Library.

Have you ever thought about learning to play a tabletop role-playing game? Are you a grizzled Dungeons & Dragons adventurer? Does this all sound like nonsense, but you're interested in having fun on a Friday afternoon in a relaxed and inclusive space? Come on down to Teen Room at North Branch for games at the library!

We'll take the pressure off of learning different TTRPG rules and systems with simplified character sheets and guided single-session one-shots or single month inclusive stories, and provide a built-in group of players for those who have the dice but not the party. Registered participants will get all the materials they need to play each game, as well as the option to use a pre-made character. Each month is a new story with new characters and maybe a new game system. Please try and let us know which ones you'll be at, so we have enough supplies and snacks. Middle and high schoolers are invited to every session!

Our first three months of play will include DnD, Monsterhearts, and the Coyote & Crow RPG.

What can we do, today, to improve muscle strength and, accordingly, to increase healthy longevity, i.e., healthspan? It starts by understanding the science of strength and of muscle function, and then appreciating how muscle changes with aging. Ultimately, we find that healthspan increases with simple and effective evidence-based strategies for improving muscle health and function.

Our speaker, Dr. Greg Tranah, PhD, is Professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at UC San Francisco. He is also Senior Scientist at California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute. Dr. Tranah?s research program focuses on identifying inherited and acquired genetic factors that impact aging and disease. In his current work he leads research teams engaged in genetic studies of aging and age-related conditions including dementia, cancer, mobility-disability, sarcopenia, heart and kidney disease.

This event is in partnership with Wonderfest, the Bay Area Beacon of Science.
