This month in Art Club we honor the work of legendary artist Ruth Asawa with a workshop she developed in the 1970s for Alvarado Elementary School in San Francisco's Noe Valley.
This month in Art Club we honor the work of legendary artist Ruth Asawa with a workshop she developed for Alvarado Elementary School in San Francisco's Noe Valley. Ruth Asawa brought art classes directly to students of the San Francisco Unified School District by volunteering to lead art classes at the school and by recruiting other artists to do the same.
Today's activity is inspired by one her art lessons, reproduced in the 2022 book on her work and life, Ruth Asawa, Citizen of the Universe published by Thames and Hudson, and which Berkeley Public Library has in its collection.
We'll be using clean, upcycled milk cartons to make geometric paper sculptures in an activity that is appropriate for all ages. We'll have milk cartons on-hand, but welcome additional donations of dry, clean half-gallon milk cartons if you have them to share.
Art Club is offered monthly on the first Saturday from 2p-3p, in front of the Claremont Branch Library. Please call for more information 510-981-6280.
